Program Overview

CIOs have come far in the past decade. There is widespread acknowledgement of the value and potential of information and communications technologies (ICT) among most senior executives, and there are more and more situations where CIOs can demonstrate their strategic value to their peers and their organisations.

However there remain significant opportunities for CIOs to become even more influential in shaping their enterprises’ growth trajectories. This finding and others were revealed as part of research conducted by the Center for CIO Leadership in July 2008. For example, while CIOs have strong confidence in their ability to tie ICT initiatives to core business issues, and despite their having clear end-to-end “sight lines” into business operations, there remains a challenge in helping to drive the creation of the business strategy, and more clearly communicating the business value of technology as a key contributor to business success.

Four core competency areas emerged from the Center’s research. These competencies represent key opportunities and focus for CIOs to advance and build their skills and capabilities as strategic business leaders.

  1. Leadership: CIOs are leaders in their organisations and are playing an increasingly important role in leading change, but they are still evolving to be viewed as true trusted advisors by their business colleagues.
  2. Business Strategy and Process: CIOs have a seat at the table, but have yet to fully seize the opportunity for participation in developing the business strategy.
  3. Innovation and Growth: CIOs are emerging as leaders of innovation and bringing new ideas to the enterprise, with a real opportunity remaining to fill the innovation execution gap.
  4. Organisation and Talent Management: CIOs know where they need to lead their technology organisations, but continue to wrestle with delegation and with building the next-generation team.

CIO Business Strategy and Leadership Programme (CBSL) developed by INSEAD and the Center for CIO Leadership builds off the four key competencies and focuses on building CIOs’ aptitude and expertise in these important business skill areas. This unique programme is tailored for accomplished and experienced CIOs looking to expand their business strategy and leadership capabilities. The programme focuses on the business aspects of being a strategic CIO in today’s dynamic business environment.
